As a child too young to join the local teen youth center, Alfred Davis and his brother would sneak into the center's basement to play the drums used by the church band. The caretaker would hear the playing and chase them away. They would return every day only to be escorted off the property. The caretaker either admired their persistence or was tired of running down the basement stairs, agreed to give them drum lessions in exchange for cleaning up the center.
Alfred saved his money, bought a drum set from a pawn shop and started taking lessions with Tracy Borst, one of the premiere drummers from the swing era. Tracy introduced him to drummers such as Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Louie Bellson, Ginger Baker, Elvin Jones and Max Roach. All these drummers have had a great influence on Alfred's style of playing. Tracy exposed him to every type of musical style and rhythm, this is evident in the wide range and variety of music on the play list of A.D. & The Soul Co. Alfred also attended Los Angeles City College and Cal Poly Pomona.
Alfred formed A.D. & The Soul Co. in 1999 and has been committed to entertaining audiences ever since. He has also performed with legends such as Buddy Collette and Count Basie. A.D. & the Soul Co. was started because of Alfred's desire to play challenging music. He wanted to find musicians that were as passionate as he was about playing the type of music that everyone can enjoy, all while having a great time.
A.D. & The Soul Co. is comprised of a pool of top session musicians. Many of us have been together for over twenty years with hundreds of combined years of professional experience. These musicians have played with such legends as Tower of Power, Phil Collins, Rod Stewart, Brian Setzer Orchestra, The Temptations, The O'Jays, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Berry White, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Buddy Colette,Eddie Floyd and The Tonight Show Band.
They have appeared on shows such as American Idol, The Grammy and Academy Awards and The Tonight Show. They have performed for President Bill Clinton, Governor Jerry Brown and Mayor Tom Bradley. Their music can be heard on countless sound tracks, television shows and radio. Their talent has garnered them Grammy considerations and awards for their compositions and contributions.
All of our musicians are formally trained, many with college degrees. They are all accomplished on their instruments and read music fluently resulting in confidence, that can be seen and heard throughout the performance. They also are all skilled soloists, which makes for a more inspiring and captivating show.
All members of A.D. & The Soul Co. are professionals and conduct themselves accordingly. Their work ethic is impeccable. They are punctual, adhere to all rules, follow instructions and dress appropriately for the event.
Having a group of such talented musicians allows for variations in the instrumentation without compromising the quality of music. This also allows for members who specialize in one gender of music, to be called upon when the event requires a specific type of music or has a theme.
